METRIC EXPANSE
I love earth, planetary and space science, so a lot of my art work reflects that. I try to interlace the beauty of the vastness in scale and complexity of our natural systems along with the beauty of our science coming to know them in a certain way. Often I also aim to communicating scientific concepts in what I create, sometimes using them in training and talks.
I have always loved pictures of earth from space and seeing the northern lights from that vantage point.
Individual Piece: Measuring Chaos. I find it helpful to communicate uncertainty in hazard and scientific modelling with art - this painting shows that our gridlines are used to define the storm, but within those scientific framework lines is huge amounts of variation and complexity. We can understand storms well enough for forecasting with these mesh lines, but sometimes that complexity inside the grids is important and it throws off our models, and the forecast can be wrong. The more grid squares the better we know the storm.
