The Cailleach
The Cailleach is the Celtic goddess of cold and winter winds. She is said to bring on the veil of the dark time of the year at Samhain or Halloween. Often depicted as an old lady and a somewhat scary character. I have never really thought of her like that. More an old wise caring woman who settles us down to the quiet evening and night of the year for rest. Freezing the seeds in place, safe and ready for spring. I started to think of the year like a day a few years back. Autumn, the relaxation of evening, the winter the night for rest and indoor life, spring for new beginnings like the morning and summer for the hight of the day. I don’t mind winter so much thinking of it like that.
Mitochondrial Eve, everyone’s Grandma
Mitochondrial eve is our most recent maternal common ancestor of all humans today. Her lineage runs through mothers to daughter down the maternal lineage lines. She wasn’t the only woman at the time, when she lived somewhere in east central Africa, but all other maternal lineages have died out, with no off spring or daughters. As generations go on and more and different lines die out, who mitochondrial eve is will change and evolve through time. I like the idea and knowledge that we all have the same grandma back in time, despite our differences today. I wonder what she would think of her wayward offspring and how we relate to each other.
